Workflow For Hard Cover Binding with Rounding and Backing

From sewn book block.

Step 1
Book back gluing using your existing Wohlenberg with hot-melt,
Coat thinly but evenly. Normally cold glue is used for this purpose.

Step 2
Trim book blocks to size, ensure it fits snuggly with 3mm overhangs on all the 3 sides.

Step 3
Round and back the book blocks on the machine (Purple Magna)

Step 4
Paste gauze or mull cloth of about 15mm from head/tail of book blocks and about 15mm to 20mm protruding out from the front and back of book blocks

Step 5
Use a round pipe to round the spine of the case. The spine paper is usually about 170gsm to 180gsm Kraft paper.

Step 6
Case-in on your “rocket” machine and pressed the cased in books and pressed the 2 sides of the gutters with your existing machine.

Case-making

Make case with spine strip using 170gsm to 180gsm Kraft paper. The strip width should be about 5mm to 6mm more than the bulk or thickness of the book.
